Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT)

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive procedure which can be used to treat many conditions including:

  • tennis elbow
  • greater trochanteric pain syndrome
  • achilles tendinopathy
  • plantar fasciitis
  • patella tendinopathies
  • hamstring tendinopathies.

How does ESWT work?

ESWT works by targeting shock waves to the affected part of the body using a special device or shockwave gun. Rapid impulses are delivered through the skin. Shockwaves are audible, low-energy sound waves, which work by increasing blood flow to the injured area which speeds up your body’s healing process. You will usually require a course of four treatments, one to two weeks apart.

Why should I have ESWT?

If you have not benefitted sufficiently from physiotherapy alone, ESWT may be offered as an additional treatment, alongside your ongoing physiotherapy exercise programme. It is a minimally invasive treatment that is carried out on an outpatient basis. In combination with exercises which appropriately stress the tendon and strengthen your muscles, this will help you to get back to your normal activities.
