What is menopause?

Menopause is a natural part of ageing for women when a change in oestrogen hormones occurs.

When the ovaries’ oestrogen production declines and an egg stops being released, a person will stop having periods, this is menopause. It is usually a gradual process however, for some people periods can stop suddenly.

Menopause usually occurs between 45 and 55 years but, can occur earlier due to underlying conditions or undergoing specific cancer treatments. Premature or early menopause can occur at any age, and in some cases there’s no clear cause.
