Clinical expertise

Professor Simon Redwood is an honorary consultant cardiologist, professor of interventional cardiology, and director of the cardiac catheter labs at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals. His expertise includes all aspects of:

  • adult interventional cardiology
  • structural heart disease, especially percutaneous treatment of aortic and mitral valve disease
  • risk factor management
  • hypertension
  • the interventional management of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest

He performs treatments such as:

  • adult interventional cardiology, IVUS
  • pressure wire
  • stent implantation
  • rotational atherectomy
  • laser angioplasty
  • trans-catheter aortic valve implantation
  • coronary sinus reducer for angina
  • percutaneous mitral valve treatments

Biography

Simon has been performing percutaneous coronary intervention for over 25 years and is trained in all aspects of adult interventional cardiology including pressure wire, stent implantation, rotational atherectomy, laser angioplasty, trans-catheter aortic valve implantation and percutaneous mitral valve interventions, as well as interventions for heart failure such as the Parachute device.

Education

Simon qualified from St George’s Hospital Medical School, London in 1987. He trained in cardiology at The Royal London Hospital, The Royal Free Hospital and St George’s Hospital, London.

He trained in interventional cardiology at The Washington Cardiology Center in the United States and at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals.

Research

Simon has a particular interest in interventional cardiology based research, including risk analysis and prediction of events post-percutaneous coronary intervention, evaluation of coronary stents, coronary artery and myocardial physiology during ischaemia.

Publications

Simon runs an active research team, has over 200 publications and is lead editor of a major interventional cardiology textbook (Oxford Textbook of Interventional Cardiology, now in its second edition). During his career, Simon has raised over £10m in grant funding and has supervised over eighteen MD and PhD theses.
