Professor John Simpson has more than 20 years of experience in paediatric and fetal cardiology.

He performs treatments such as:

  • fetal echocardiography (from 13 weeks’ gestation)

  • 3D echocardiography
  • transoesophageal echocardiography


Biography

Professor John Simpson participates in both acute and outpatient management of patients with congenital heart disease. His particular focus is on ultrasound imaging of the heart, with sub-speciality interests in prenatal diagnosis, 3D echocardiography and transoesophageal echocardiography.

John is regularly consulted both within the UK and abroad for advice on diagnosis and management and holds a national clinical excellence award.

Education

  • 1985: BSc – University of Edinburgh
  • 1987: MB ChB – graduated in medicine from the University of Edinburgh. Trained in paediatric cardiology at Guy’s Hospital in London and at the University of California, San Francisco
  • 1999: Consultant at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust

Research

Professor John Simpson’s research interests include:

  • 3D echocardiography
  • improving prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart disease using machine learning/automation
  • virtual reality imaging of congenital heart disease

Publications

John has published over 150 scientific papers and has contributed to the leading textbooks in this field. He recently led the USA/European expert group on the application of 3D echocardiography in congenital heart disease. John presents and teaches regularly at national and international conferences in the field.
