Professor David O’Brart has been a consultant ophthalmic surgeon in private practice and at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals in London since 1996. He is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon and professor of corneal science.

He performs treatments such as:

  • cornea surgery
  • cataract refractive surgery
  • anterior segment of the eye


Biography

Professor David O’Brart is the director of refractive, cornea and anterior segment surgery and cataract surgery in the ophthalmology department. He was appointed as an honorary professor of corneal science at King’s College, University of London in 2015.

David is a past president and treasurer of the United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He is also a past council member and secretary of the British Society of Refractive Surgeons, past-president and secretary of the Southern Ophthalmological Society, and a co-opted board member of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.

He has organised and chaired more than 60 symposia on refractive, corneal and cataract surgery and glaucoma at national and international meetings. He was a founding member of the microsurgical skills committee and is an examiner and specialist advisor to the National Institute for Clinical Excellence and the Medical Health Research Authority for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

Education

  • 1990: Qualification as an ophthalmic surgeon
  • Training in corneal and small-incision cataract surgery
  • 2 years at the United Medical and Dental Schools, University of London, investigating the role of excimer laser refractive and corneal surgery
  • Ophthalmic surgical training at St Thomas’ Hospital, London and Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge
  • Fellowship with Professor Weinreb at the internationally renowned Shiley Eye Centre in San Diego, California, where he studied advanced techniques in glaucoma

Publications

David has co-authored 3 books on corneal topography, refractive and corneal surgery. He has contributed numerous chapters to international ophthalmic textbooks and has over 100 scientific publications in peer-reviewed ophthalmic journals.
