Clinical expertise

Miss Karen Harrison-Phipps is a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals. She specialises in surgery for:

  • pneumothorax
  • empyema
  • pleural effusion
  • chest wall diseases such as chest wall cancers, pectus surgery and trauma

She performs treatments such as:

  • all minimally invasive surgery (VATS)
  • lung resection
  • surgery in high-risk cases
  • complex chest surgery with multiple teams

She has special interests in lung cancer, metastatic cancer to the lungs, mesothelioma.



Biography

After completing an engineering degree at Strathclyde University in Glasgow, Karen decided to retrain as a doctor at Southampton University, qualifying in 1984. She trained in cardiothoracic surgery at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King’s College Hospitals before going to the Mayo Clinic in the United States to compete a one-year advanced fellowship in thoracic surgery with emphasis on minimally invasive surgery and oesophageal surgery.

She offers the full range of thoracic surgery including minimally invasive lung resection, surgery for mesothelioma, metastasectomy, resection of mediastinal tumours and thymoma.
