As one of the largest neonatal units in England, caring for 1,000 babies a year and providing 5,000 intensive care days, you can be assured of excellent care from staff who go out of their way to help.

Our location on the same site as maternity services at St Thomas’ means we care for mothers and babies before and after birth. We provide specialist care for babies with complex problems (including cardiac, surgical and neurological conditions).

We’re a centre of excellence for neonatal research, in association with our academic partner, King’s College London. Our new-born imaging centre is a clinical research facility within the neonatal intensive care unit. It is home to a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner, so that premature or sick babies have immediate access to excellent imaging facilities.

Our team of expert staff provides 24-hour care for premature and sick babies.

The neonatal unit is divided into three areas:

  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) – provides support for babies with breathing problems and other specialist treatment needs
  • Neonatal High Dependency Unit– support babies who require less intensive care than babies in NICU, but are still not stable enough for care in the SCBU
  • Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) – supports babies who need tube feeding, additional oxygen support and light therapy (phototherapy).
