Specialises in children’s lower gastrointestinal surgery including hernia repair.

Biography

Mr Hemanshoo Thakkar is a consultant paediatric surgeon at Evelina London Children’s Hospital.

After qualifying from King’s College London in 2009, he undertook his surgical training in the London and South East Deanery. Following completion of his training, Mr Thakkar worked as a locum consultant at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. He is a Global Scholar in Surgical Leadership attained from Harvard Medical School, USA.

In his career to date, he has received a whole host of awards for his paediatric work. In 2021, he was awarded the title of young consultant of the year from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. He was also awarded the renowned Alex Simpson Smith Travelling Fellowship Award for child health research in 2019. Mr Thakkar has also been awarded the title of global scholar in surgical leadership from the prestigious Harvard Medical School.

He has an interest in surgical education, minimal access training and surgical innovation.

Special/ research interests

Mr Hemanshoo Thakkar is the educational lead of paediatric surgery at Evelina London and works as an undergraduate tutor for second and third year medical students at King’s College London. He has undergone research on necrotising enterocolitis and Hirschsprung’s disease and created evidence-based podcasts in paediatric surgery, bringing medical education to a wider audience.
