Specialises in gastroenterology including the management of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s Disease.

Biography

Dr Simon Anderson is a consultant gastroenterologist and has practiced at Guy’s and St Thomas’ since 2006. He specialises in digestive and stomach diseases, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

After graduating from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, he undertook higher specialist training in liver diseases and intensive care at King’s College Hospital, in addition to gastroenterology and general internal medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’. He gained his Doctorate of Medicine (MD) from the University of London in 2004.

Dr Simon Anderson is passionate about medical education and sharing his medical skills and expertise with the next generation of doctors. During full-time research at St Thomas’ Hospital, he was awarded a Wellcome Institute Research Fellowship and won the BMA Insole award. He sits on the national board of capsule endoscopy training and accreditation.

Special/ research interests

His particular interests with regards to research include approaches for diagnosing and treating small-intestinal disease and ulcerative colitis. Most notably, Dr Simon Anderson was the lead investigator on a recent clinical trial investigating the role of exercise in Crohn’s disease and is also investigating the role of exercise in inflammatory bowel disease (principal investigator).

As part of the IBD department at Guy’s and St Thomas’, he is involved in several current clinical trials in IBD.
