Dr Matt Wright

MB BB, PhD, FRCP, FHRS

Consultant cardiologist and electrophysiologist

Specialises in electrophysiology and the management of arrhythmias.

Dr Matt Wright is an experienced consultant cardiologist and electrophysiologist.

He specialises in the management of all arrhythmias, but in particular atrial fibrillation (AF) and atrial tachycardias (AT). Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia and can lead to strokes. Dr Wright treats patients with any disturbance of heart rhythm, typical symptoms of arrhythmia can include palpitations, but patients often feel as if the heart is beating very rapidly, or in some cases stopping. Other symptoms which may be due to heart rhythm problems include tiredness, pain in the throat, shortness of breath and collapses or faints.

Conditions

  • Heart palpitations including fast and slow heart beats.
  • Atrial tachycardias (AT).
  • Ventricular tachycardia (VT).
  • Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT).
  • Atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT).
  • Atrioventricular reciprocating tachycardia (AVRT).
  • Supraventricular tachycardia
  • Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome.
  • Heart failure.
  • Dizzy spells, fainting, tiredness, shortness of breath, lethargy and blackouts
  • Atrial flutters.
  • Heart block.
  • Ventricular arrhythmias.

Treatments

  • Atrial fibrillation including AF ablation.
  • Atrial tachycardia ablation.
  • Pacemaker implantation, including defibrillators, cardiac resynchronisation and general accessory pathways.
  • Implantable cardiac defibrillators.
  • Cardiac resynchronisation therapy.
  • Stroke Prevention.
  • Medical management of heart conditions including anticoagulation medicines.

Research and teaching

Dr Matt Wright has published extensively in the field of electrophysiology, with over 100 peer reviewed papers and over 30 reviews and book chapters. He writes particularly about the management of atrial fibrillation and atrial tachycardia, with more than 100 scientific peer reviewed articles and over 20 book chapters.

His research interest is in improving the outcomes of patients having AF ablation, in particular the role of real-time lesion visualisation. He is also interested in peri and intraprocedural imaging to aid with patient selection for atrial fibrillation and achieving better outcomes.

Dr Wright is actively involved in training consultants and senior fellows from across the world in complex ablation techniques. He regularly gives lectures at international meetings as well as perform televised ablations to teach other physicians.
