Consultant ophthalmic surgeon

Miss Cynthia Yu-Wai-Man is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon in glaucoma and cataract, Senior Clinical Lecturer at King’s College London and Medical Research Council Clinician Scientist. She specialises in cataract surgery and in the medical, laser and surgical management of glaucoma.

She has been awarded over £2.1m in research funding over the last two years and has received several prestigious awards, namely the Medical Research Council (MRC) Clinician Scientist Fellowship in 2020, King’s Prize Fellowship in 2019, MRC Confidence-in-Concept Grant in 2016 and EUREKA Translational Medicine Fellowship in 2015.

Special interests

Miss Yu-Wai-Man is the Chief Investigator of advanced therapeutics in glaucoma surgery. She leads the state-of-the-art Glaucoma and Gene Therapy Lab at King’s College London and has also set up a unique UK Glaucoma BioResource. Her lab is focused on multi-omics research in glaucoma, stratified medicine and developing new targeted therapeutics in glaucoma.


  • Glaucoma surgery – trabeculectomy, aqueous shunt (Baerveldt tube, Ahmed tube), minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (Microshunt PreserFlo)
  • Cataract surgery – phacoemulsification + IOL implant
  • Glaucoma laser – selective laser trabeculoplasty, Yag laser peripheral iridotomy, cyclodiode laser and endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation, Yag laser capsulotomy

In 2014, Cynthia was awarded a prestigious NIHR UCL Francis Crick Institute Clinical Research Fellowship and spent three years researching how to improve the success rate in glaucoma surgery at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital (PhD 2014-2017).
